Why Join PDK?PDK develops a sense of belonging to the exciting endeavor of education - locally, nationally, internationally. PDK is the only organization dedicated to publicly funded education which reaches out to the great variety of roles, levels and jobs in education. Benefits flow both ways: to and from the society, the educator, and the students from the areas of Research, Service, and Leadership. Educators can benefit from PDK Membership at every stage of their career.Beginning teachers get assistance through the myriad of activities that are new to them.Mid-Career teachers and administrators are rejuvenated by interacting with other colleagues in their field, while pursuing their own development. Veterans deepen their own understanding while mentoring newer colleagues and enjoying the exchange.

AWARDSUniversity of Toronto Chapter PDK sponsors awards in secondary schools and Faculties of Education at all levels through its Foundation programme. The Prospective Educator Award starts at the chapter level and continues at the International level. It is for students still in secondary school who are planning to become teachers. The Chair for this year's award is Kari Peters kari@divbyzero.com The Excellence in Student Teaching is open to students in Faculties of Education. The Chair for this year's award is Kari Peters kari@divbyzero.com The Jackman Award is open to students at an Education Faculty in Ontario, including those at the graduate level. The chair for this year's award is Dr. Barnabas Emenogu barnabas.emenogu@ontario.ca Graduate Fellowships and Scholarships are for Educators who are pursuing graduate degrees full-time. Contact: Susan Seidman, sseidman@sympatico.ca The Doctoral Dissertation Award is open to recent Doctoral graduates of Faculties of Education. Chapter winners receive a year's membership in PDK and are automatically entered in the PDK International competition, which offers awards up to $5,000 US and publication of a summary in The Kappan magazine. Chair for the award is Clay Lafleur - claymar@rogers.com Funding for awards comes from the PDK Foundation, Patrons, and the Walk for Education. Funds raised by local participants in the Walk also support other endeavors. For example, they support scholarship programmes at the secondary and post-secondary levels. In addition they are used for the University of Toronto Chapter's Future Educators Association, a mentoring programme that begins at the elementary level, helping students from diverse communities develop their interest and capabilities in the teaching profession. They also support those Spelling Bees co-partnered with PDK, U of T Chapter. Full details of each award will be posted on the Chapter website, www.pdk-ut.ca annually in the fall. |
