Foundation

In 1966 George H. Reavis, an outstanding Kappan and Ohio educator, created the Educational Foundation at Phi Delta Kappa International. Reavis made a large gift to Phi Delta Kappa International and envisioned a foundation that would greatly expand PDK′s program activities.

The PDK Educational Foundation supports a variety of financial aid programs, seminars and institutes, and publications. PDK membership dues are not used for foundation-sponsored programs. They are wholly supported by member donations to the Educational Foundation.

The 50th anniversary year winds down with outstanding Foundation events.

University of Toronto Chapter presents an annual award in honour of its first President, Henry Jackman. Chairperson Ruth Childs, Foundation Chair Susan Seidman, and OISE Doctoral Student Saad Chahine had the very pleasant task of reading the application essays. We are delighted that Susanna Tang, our 2007 winner from OISE was able to join us at our June social.

Kari Peters was introduced at our AGM as our Chapter Excellence in Student Teaching (Prospective Educator) award winner. We are delighted that OISE/UT Dean of Education Jane Gaskell helped present Kari with the International level Prospective Educator award, which carries a cheque for $1000.00. Gerald Read Travel Scholarship 2006 Winner

PDK educational tours are going this year to Italy in November, and New Zealand in April 2008.

Stephanie Fetterolf, our current program co-Chair, received a PDK Gerald Read travel scholarship to go on a PDK Educator-to-Educator trip to China. The trip was planned by Dr. Yong Zhao, Distinguished Professor at Michigan State, University Director of the US-China Centre for Research in Education, and Director of the Centre for Innovation and Technology.

The tour visited Beijing, Xi'An, and Shanghai. They visited Ministries of Education, education researchers, and schools. In Beijing, the schools are considered the best in the country. In Shanghai, they're considered the most innovative. Xi'An, however, is currently a shadow of the glory that created the Terra Cotta Warriors. Its schools deal with issues of poverty. The China trip was carefully planned to show the full range of educational situations in China.
