Read the following quote from the annual report written by Ontario's Chief Superintendent of Education, Egerton Ryerson, in 1867:
"A series of Merit-cards, with appropriate illustrations and mottoes … are to be awarded daily, or more generally weekly, to Pupils meriting them. One class of Cards is for punctuality; another for good conduct; a third for diligence; a fourth for perfect recitations. … Thus an influence is exerted upon every part of a Pupil's conduct, and during every day of his school career. If he cannot learn as fast as another pupil, he can be as punctual, as diligent, and maintain as good conduct. … Each Pupil is judged and rewarded according to his merits, as exhibited in his every day school life."
Do you agree with Dr. Ryerson that rewards are a good way to motivate students to learn, to work hard, and to follow the school's rules? Answer in approximately 500 words, using both your experience and what you have learned in your education studies.
The deadline for submission is, April 18, 2008. Application packages should be sent to: Professor Ruth Childs, Chair, The Jackman Award, OISE/UT, 252 Bloor St. W., Room 9-110, Toronto, ON, M5S 1V6. If you have any questions, please email Professor Childs at rchilds@utoronto.oise.ca.
